Like millions of other people around the USA, I sat at my computer and watched as Apple unveiled their new tablet device, the iPad. I was following my twitter and Facebook streams, as well as watching the Engadget Live Blog as it covered the event. I have to admit that my first reaction was DOH!! This is just a large iPhone without the phone part. Big deal. I even tweeted my disdain for the iPad concept and joined 1000’s of others that pooh poohed the idea of the iPad. Then, on the way home from work, my brain started to turn the idea of the iPad around in my head, looking at it from different angles. Apple does not do things just to do them, so it stands to reason that they thought this iPad thing out just a little and I wanted to understand what their reasoning was.
I’m a photographer and I love everything about pictures. I’m also somewhat of a geek in that I like techy toys and little gadgets that make life easier etc. When I started to think about the iPad from that direction, my attitude changed. I realized that I could use this iPad as a portable portfolio during client sessions. What a great way to show my work! It would save lugging my laptop around everywhere! Then, a little earlier this morning, I read a tweet from my dad referencing a blog post by Rory Marinich that solidified my thinking. It’s all about the magic. That’s why I now can’t wait to get my hands on an iPad…it’s the magic! Mr Marinich is right, it’s going to revolutionize the way that we share information and ideas.
6 months after everyone has an iPad and it has become as common place as the iPhone or iTouch, the “magic” will probably tone down just a little…maybe. By that time I might have exchanged my iPhone for a cheaper phone without all the bells and whistles and be happily engaged with my iPad. However, even if that isn’t the case, the iPad is here and I now think that it will have a far reaching positive impact on how we socially interact with each other. I think it’s awfully nice of Apple to give us that opportunity.
